Dozens of campaign signs were lined up much like the community last Tuesday. The election took an interesting turn on Super Tuesday at the Texas southern university (TSU) campus. The whole community took their place in line to ensure that their vote counted.

Some reported waiting in line for over three hours, while others mentioned their visit to be quite pleasant. A few were left distraught when the administrators of the election divided the line into whoever was voting Republicans or Democrats. Others with handicapped needs were left to fend for themselves being that there were no operations set-in place to make their voting experience any easier.

Diesel Rogers, a registered voter, says “my voting experience was okay until I had this lady from the republican side of the voting primary at Texas southern questioning people in line if they were there to vote republican and replied ma’am you aren’t supposed to ask someone who their voting for because that’s supposed to be private,” He went further to call the Harris County voters registration building to ask if the lady was able to ask people if they were voting republican. Due to this being the primaries you are able to ask those questions but Rogers feels like the intimacy of voting should be held to a standard mentioning his main goal and reason for coming out was “to get Donald Trump out of office.” Rodney Ellis whose running for commissioner did take the steps necessary to engage with and comfort the crowded line. Taking the time to introduce those waiting their turn to vote with comforting words such as “just stick in there.” His presence was reassuring and the crowd appeared to regain patience alongside having the opportunity to have a critical and eventful conversation with Ellis. In the interview, Ellis said “I’ve been in politics since I was young at 27 Congressman Mickey Leland mentored me as his chief of staff and with his support I ran for Houston city council,” when asked to give insight on his journey and aspirations elaborating on his upbringing in politics giving the community a full background on who he is and what he stands for. There were plenty of activists doing there due diligence to make sure you voted for the right person for the right reasons. From enlightenment from different individuals and their individualistic perspectives, mindsets and mentalities, to others passing out snacks, waters and juice to keep the heat of standing in a line outdoors from detouring you from achieving what you came there for. The lines continued to grow and it was a sight to see the communities’ dedication to spending hours of their time just to place their vote.
